What Is That Noise? Yacht Sounds Crew Should Never Ignore

What if the first warning of a developing fault is not an alarm, but a sound only one crew member notices?

A yacht is never completely quiet. Pumps start, compressors cycle, ventilation moves air and machinery creates its own familiar rhythm. After enough time onboard, crew often recognise those sounds without consciously listening to them.

That familiarity can be valuable. A new rattle, knock, whine or electrical buzz does not confirm that equipment is failing, but it may be the first sign that something has changed. The correct response is not to guess at the cause. It is to notice, report and investigate it safely.

Change matters more than volume

The loudest sound is not necessarily the most concerning. A stabiliser pump or bow thruster may be noisy during normal operation, while a much quieter clicking sound from equipment that is usually silent may deserve immediate attention.

Ask what has changed. Did the sound begin suddenly? Is it becoming more frequent? Does it appear at a particular engine speed, electrical load or point in a pump cycle? Has the vibration in the surrounding deck or bulkhead also changed?

Crew who regularly work in guest areas can sometimes notice these differences before the engineering department does. Interior crew may hear a pump cycling behind a cabin wall. Deck crew may feel an unfamiliar vibration through the aft deck. The chef may be the first person to notice that a refrigeration compressor sounds different.

Reporting it is not overreacting. It gives the appropriate person an opportunity to establish whether the sound is normal.

Grinding, rumbling or increasing vibration

Grinding, scraping and rumbling from rotating machinery can have several possible causes. These may include worn or damaged components, poor alignment, inadequate lubrication, looseness or contact between moving parts. Sound alone cannot identify which explanation is correct.

Vibration deserves similar attention. DNV notes that excessive vibration in rotating machinery can contribute to bearing failures, shaft fractures, structural damage and malfunction. Proper investigation may require measurements and analysis rather than someone simply listening beside the equipment.

If machinery sounds or feels different, crew should avoid touching guards, casings or moving equipment to investigate. Record the conditions and inform the engineer or responsible officer.

A pump that sounds as if it contains gravel

A harsh sound often compared with gravel or stones moving through a pump may indicate cavitation. Cavitation occurs when local pressure inside a pump falls sufficiently for vapour bubbles to form and then collapse.

Cavitation can create significant noise and vibration and may damage the impeller and pump housing. The underlying cause can involve suction conditions, flow, pressure, temperature or the suitability of the pump for the application.

That does not mean every noisy pump is cavitating. The practical lesson for crew is that a new gravel-like sound should be reported with details about which equipment was operating, the tank level, the demand on the system and whether performance had changed.

Hammering inside the pipework

A sharp bang when a pump starts, stops or a valve closes may be associated with water hammer. This is a pressure surge caused by a rapid change in the velocity of fluid inside a pipe. Depending on the system and severity, pressure surges can damage pipes, joints, pumps or valves.

Pipework can also knock because of movement, loose supports or thermal expansion. A crew member should not assume that every bang has the same cause. Note exactly when it occurs. For example, does it happen when a toilet flushes, a tap closes, the watermaker changes state or a pressure pump stops?

Patterns help the engineering team narrow down the system involved.

Equipment that keeps starting and stopping

Crew quickly become accustomed to pumps and compressors cycling in the background. A change in that pattern can be more informative than the sound itself.

A pressure pump that begins running every few minutes, a bilge pump operating more frequently or a refrigeration compressor that rarely stops may warrant investigation. Possible explanations range from genuine demand to a leak, sensor problem, control fault or change in system performance.

There may also be an innocent operational reason. Guests could be using more water, a washdown may be underway or equipment may be responding to unusually warm conditions. This is why context matters.

Rather than reporting that “the pump sounds wrong”, explain how its behaviour differs from normal.

Buzzing, crackling or signs of overheating

A new electrical buzz, crackle or arcing sound should be treated cautiously, particularly when accompanied by heat, staining, a burning smell, flickering or repeated tripping.

Crew should not open electrical equipment or attempt repairs unless they are trained, authorised and following the yacht’s procedures. UK Health and Safety Executive guidance advises removing equipment from use when there is concern about its safety and having it checked by a competent person. It also identifies burn marks and staining as possible evidence of overheating.

The yacht’s own isolation procedures, safety management system and emergency instructions take priority. If there is smoke, fire, a strong burning smell or immediate danger, raise the alarm and follow the onboard emergency response.

What should crew record?

A useful report gives the engineer more than an imitation of the noise. Where it is safe to do so, note:

  • The exact location and time
  • What equipment was running
  • Whether the yacht was alongside, at anchor or underway
  • Engine speed, electrical load or operating conditions, if known
  • How long the sound lasted and whether it repeated
  • Any associated smell, heat, vibration, leakage, alarm or loss of performance
  • Whether the sound stopped after another piece of equipment changed state

An audio or video recording may help if it can be made without approaching machinery, entering a restricted space or becoming distracted from an active duty. It should supplement a report, not delay one.

Know when the sound is a safety issue

Persistent noise can also be a workplace exposure issue, even when the machinery is operating normally. Requirements concerning occupational noise and vibration depend on the yacht’s flag and employment arrangements. For example, the UK MCA’s noise and vibration regulations and associated codes apply to UK-registered yachts and other vessels on which workers are employed.

Captains should check the requirements of the applicable flag administration, along with the yacht’s class requirements, manufacturer instructions and safety management procedures.

“Never ignore” does not mean every crew member should stop machinery or begin troubleshooting. It means a new or changing sound should be acknowledged and passed to the right person. The next time something onboard sounds different, record where, when and under what conditions it happened. That information may be far more useful than trying to name the fault.
